Digital Marketing Agency or Consultant in Nepal: Which One Should You Hire?
Agency or consultant is the first fork in the road, and most businesses pick on price. Here's the difference that actually matters: who does the work each week, when each one fits, what each costs in Nepal, and the five questions to ask both before you decide.
Short answer: hire an agency in Nepal when you need several channels staffed at the same time, every week, and you can afford the senior tier. Hire a consultant when you need one experienced person to diagnose the real problem, fix it, and be accountable for the number. The mistake most businesses make is buying an agency's cheapest tier, which gets them a junior with a checklist, when what they needed was one senior person for a defined problem.
What each one actually is
An agency is a team. It can run SEO, ads, social and content at the same time, because different people do each. A consultant is usually one person, or a very small practice, who diagnoses, sets priorities and often does the work as well. Neither is better. They're built for different jobs.
The question that decides it: who does the work?
In the published Nepali price lists, the deliverables look almost the same across agencies and across tiers. What changes between a "standard" and a "premium" package is mostly who's assigned to you. One agency's premium SEO tier is Rs 60,000 a month and another's is Rs 88,000, and the second includes a dedicated project manager. That single line is most of the difference. I compared the lists in what digital marketing actually costs in Nepal.
So when you compare an agency and a consultant, don't compare the deliverables lists. Ask each one who will actually touch your account every week, and how many hours.
When an agency is the right call
- You need daily production across several channels: posts, videos, ads, email, all at once.
- You want cover. One person can be ill or on a trek; a team keeps going.
- Your work needs sustained capacity in editorial or digital PR, where volume matters.
- You have the budget for the senior tier, so a real strategist is on your account, not just on the pitch.
When a consultant is the right call
- You don't know why the marketing isn't working, and you want a diagnosis before anyone sells you a package.
- The problem crosses the line between the website, the content and the measurement, and you want one person who can fix all three.
- You want the person who pitched to be the person who does the work.
- You want to keep the findings and the accounts whether or not you carry on.
What each one costs in Nepal
Published agency retainers run from roughly NPR 15,000 a month at the low end to around NPR 90,000 at the upper end, with freelancers below that. The low end buys a few hours a month. My own consulting prices are USD 249 for an audit, USD 899 for a four week sprint and USD 1,800 a month for ongoing work, and they sit above the Nepali agency range because I do the work myself. There's no junior tier to discount into. If that's beyond budget, take the audit and implement it yourself. That happens often, and it's a completely reasonable outcome.
Ask both the same five questions
- Who will do the work each week, and how many hours?
- What will you diagnose before you propose anything?
- Which numbers will you report, and will I see them in my own accounts?
- Who owns the accounts and the content when we stop?
- What won't you do?
Whichever one answers plainly, in numbers, without a slide deck, is the one to hire. If you want the longer checklist, it's in how to choose a digital marketing expert in Nepal, and the agency version is in how to choose a digital marketing agency in Kathmandu.
Where I fit
I work as an independent digital marketing expert, not an agency. I fit focused work where diagnosis, implementation and measurement need one owner, across a website, search, paid acquisition, analytics or conversion. Daily multi channel production needs a team, and I'll say so if that's what you need.
Common questions
Is a digital marketing agency or a consultant better in Nepal?
Neither. An agency suits daily production across several channels. A consultant suits diagnosis and a defined problem with one accountable person. Match the shape of the work.
Are agencies more expensive than consultants in Nepal?
Not always. Published agency retainers start around NPR 15,000 a month, which is below most senior consultants. The cheap tier buys junior hours, so compare who does the work, not the headline price.
Can a consultant handle social media, ads and SEO together?
One person can diagnose across all three and implement where it matters. Daily production across all three at the same time is agency work.
What happens to my accounts if I switch?
If they were created in your name, nothing. If they were created in the provider's name, that's the moment you find out why that matters. Insist on ownership from day one.
How do I know which one I need?
Ask what the first month looks like. If the answer is a diagnosis and a written plan, you're talking to a consultant. If it's a content calendar, you're talking to an agency. Pick the one that matches your problem.
Not sure which one you need?
Tell me what the first month of marketing should achieve for you. I'll tell you whether that's consultant work or agency work, even if the answer is that it's not me.
