Short answer: generative engine optimisation is the work of making your business likely to be cited or recommended inside answers written by AI systems such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. There is no ranking to hold and no position to buy. What you can change is whether you are readable, quotable and recognisable as a distinct entity.

GEO in one paragraph

Generative engine optimisation aims to improve whether a source or entity can be retrieved, understood and represented in AI-generated answers. It overlaps with SEO, but citation or accurate mention is the practical outcome rather than a stable ranking. The systems, evidence and implementation details are covered in GEO versus SEO and Google AI Overviews; this page does not duplicate that tutorial.

My working method

  1. Establish a baseline. Record a fixed set of real customer questions, current citations or mentions, referral data and crawler access. Prompt checks are samples, not rankings.
  2. Verify the technical response. Inspect returned HTML, status codes, directives and relevant crawler controls rather than assuming every system sees what a browser displays.
  3. Resolve entity ambiguity. Reconcile names, profiles, services and locations with visible claims and a connected structured-data graph.
  4. Improve source quality. Rewrite only the pages that need clearer answers, attributable evidence or first-hand detail. I do not generate pages merely to increase volume.
  5. Measure without pretending certainty. Repeat the same prompt sample, review logs and referrals, and document what changed. A citation cannot be guaranteed.

Background and evidence

My useful advantage here is implementation depth. I work across Next.js and MERN development, technical SEO, structured data and content architecture, so a rendering or data-graph finding does not have to stop at a recommendation. My public GitHub profile, professional profiles and fuller background are linked from the entity page.

I publish the limits alongside the work. The audit of this site reports a weak non-brand result instead of presenting its healthier technical score as proof of commercial success. That is the same evidence standard I use for GEO: observed output, named data boundaries and no invented visibility score.

Where this matters in Nepal, and where it does not

I would rather narrow this than oversell it. GEO is worth investment where buyers research before they choose, and especially where those buyers are outside Nepal:

  • Trekking, tour and travel operators. A traveller in Germany planning an Everest Base Camp trip increasingly asks an AI assistant which operators are reputable. That answer may be the only shortlist they ever see. See SEO for trekking and hospitality.
  • Hotels and hospitality, for the same reason.
  • Schools, colleges and training institutes, where prospective students and parents research heavily.
  • Software and IT services firms selling to overseas clients, who are often the earliest adopters of AI-assisted vendor research.
  • Clinics and specialist healthcare, with the caveat that these are sensitive categories where accuracy and credentials matter more than reach.

Where it is the wrong first investment: a business whose customers are entirely local and walk-in. A restaurant in Jhamsikhel or a hardware shop in Butwal gets far more from local SEO and the map pack than from AI citations. I will tell you that rather than sell you the more fashionable service.

Where I fit

I am best suited to a focused engagement where technical access, entity structure and a limited set of commercially important pages need one owner. The transactional scope and hand-off are on the GEO and AEO consulting page.

I am not the right fit for mass content production, guaranteed placement, reputation manufacture or a large digital PR campaign requiring a full outreach team. For a local walk-in business with weak map visibility, local SEO is normally the more immediate priority.

What I will not claim: that I can place you in ChatGPT, guarantee a citation, or predict AI referral volume. Nobody can, and the systems change month to month. The scope, the fixes and the measurement are committable. The outcome is not.

Background: 4+ years and 40+ projects across Nepal, India, the US, UK, Australia, Canada, the UAE and Singapore, from Kathmandu. More on the entity page.

Common questions

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation: making your business likely to be cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers rather than ranked in a list of links.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO competes for a position and wins a click. GEO competes to be a source inside written prose and often wins a mention with no click at all.

Can you guarantee a citation in ChatGPT?

No. There is no ranking to hold and answers are regenerated per query. Eligibility and probability can be improved; placement cannot be promised.

How do you start a GEO engagement?

With a recorded baseline, technical access checks and an entity review. Recommendations follow evidence rather than a predetermined content package.

Which AI crawlers should I allow?

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Googlebot controls crawling and Search eligibility. Google-Extended controls certain Gemini training and grounding uses, and blocking it does not remove a page from Google Search AI features. For ChatGPT Search discovery, allow OAI-SearchBot; GPTBot is the separate control for potential model training. Google also says no special AI schema or llms.txt file is required for Google Search.

Is GEO worth it for a local Nepali business?

Usually not first. If your customers are local and walk-in, the map pack is worth far more. GEO pays where buyers research before choosing, especially from abroad.
