Free AI Search Checker
Check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI answers can read your website, and see the three things to fix first. Free, no sign-up, and most checks take a few seconds.
Why I built it
A site can rank on Google and still be hard for an AI engine to read. The usual causes are small: a robots.txt written years ago that blocks a crawler nobody had heard of then, a page whose text only appears after JavaScript runs, or no structured data saying who the business is and where. Each one is quick to check and usually quick to fix, so this checker does all of them in one go and tells you which to fix first.
What it checks, and how it scores
| Check | Points | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Search and AI answer crawlers | 30 | Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, read from robots.txt the way the crawlers read it. A blocked crawler can’t put you in its answers. |
| Indexable and quotable | 15 | The page answers 200, with no noindex. nosnippet stops Google quoting the page, which keeps it out of AI Overviews. |
| Text in the HTML | 15 | Most AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript. If the words only appear after a script runs, they see an empty page. |
| Who you are, in structured data | 10 | Organization, LocalBusiness or Person markup with your name, address and contact details. |
| Profiles linked with sameAs | 5 | Your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and other official profiles, so engines can tell they are all you. |
| Title and description | 5 | The first description of the page an engine reads. |
| Sitemap | 5 | How crawlers find every page, not only the ones linked from the homepage. |
| HTTPS | 5 | Expected by every engine and browser. |
| Canonical URL | 5 | Tells engines which address to credit when the same page has several. |
| llms.txt | 5 | Optional. A short summary file for AI tools; low weight because no major engine has confirmed it uses it yet. |
Training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot are listed in the results but cost no points. Blocking them keeps your content out of model training; it doesn’t stop you appearing in AI search.
What it can’t tell you
- Firewall blocks. A CDN or firewall can block crawlers before robots.txt is read. The checker can’t see those rules.
- Every page. It checks the address you enter. Run it on your most important pages one at a time.
- Whether AI engines actually name you. That depends on what other sites say about you as much as on your own site. For that, ask the engines directly, or see how GEO and AEO work.
Questions
Is the AI search checker free?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no email to give. It checks one page each time you run it.
Does it store the sites I check?
No. The address goes to this site's server, which fetches that site's public pages once and sends a summary back. Neither the address nor the result is saved.
Should I block GPTBot?
Only if you don't want your content used to train OpenAI's models. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler; ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. You can block the first and still appear in ChatGPT's answers, as long as the second is allowed. Anthropic splits the same way (ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search), and Google-Extended controls Gemini training without affecting Google Search.
Does llms.txt matter?
It's a proposed standard: a short Markdown file at /llms.txt that tells AI tools what a site is and where its key pages are. No major AI engine has confirmed it uses the file for answers yet, so it carries only 5 of the 100 points here. It takes ten minutes to write, which is why it's still worth having.
My site scores well. Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend it?
Because being readable only gets you considered. When someone asks for the best business of your kind, AI answers lean on what other websites say about you: reviews, directories, news, lists and forums. This checker covers the part on your own site. The rest is reputation, and that is the work in GEO and AEO consulting.
robots.txt allows a crawler. Can the site still block it?
Yes. A firewall or CDN can turn crawlers away before robots.txt is read. Cloudflare's “Block AI bots” setting does exactly that. The checker reads robots.txt and tells you when a site runs on Cloudflare, but it can't see firewall rules, so check those settings too.
Using it in an article or a talk
You’re welcome to. Please credit it as AI Search Checker by Shashikant Shah with a link to this page. Results for a specific site come from that site’s public files at the moment you ran the check. Journalists and organisers can find bios and a photo in the press kit.
Want the fixes done for you?
I fix the technical side and work on what other sites say about you, which is what decides whether AI engines recommend a business. The first call is free.
