Website Development Cost in Nepal: How Much a Website Really Costs in 2026
Every quote you receive in Kathmandu will be different, and the reason isn't that some vendors are honest and others are not. It is that they're quoting different products using identical words. This explains what actually drives the price, what the recurring costs are, and the six things almost always missing from the number you were given.
Short answer: a template-based brochure site is the cheapest tier and is adequate for many small businesses. A custom marketing site costs several times more. An ecommerce store costs several times more again. A web application is priced by developer time, not pages. Your domain is probably free if it is .com.np, and the cost nobody budgets for is maintenance.
A note on the numbers below. The ranges come from published Nepali agency pricing compared on 9 October 2026 and from quotes my clients have shown me. Prices move and vendors differ, so get three quotes. What does not change is the structure of the cost, which is the useful part.
What actually drives the price
Page count is what everyone asks about and it's one of the weaker predictors. These matter more:
- Original design versus a purchased theme. The single biggest fork. A theme costs a few thousand rupees and a few days of adaptation. Original design is weeks of work.
- Functionality. A contact form is trivial. Payments, bookings, user accounts, inventory or dashboards are software, and software is priced by time.
- Integrations. Payment gateways, delivery partners, a CRM or accounting system each add real work and real testing.
- Who writes the content. Most quotes assume you supply it. Most clients assume the vendor writes it. This is the most common dispute in Nepali web projects.
- Performance and SEO groundwork. Image optimisation, structured data, analytics, clean URL structure. Cheap builds omit all of it, which is precisely why they're cheap.
- Who is building it. A student, a freelancer, a local agency and a senior developer are four different price points for the same brief.
Website development cost in Nepal: the price table
These ranges are where the published Nepali guides I compared on 9 October 2026 agree with each other and with the quotes my clients show me. Get three quotes anyway; the table tells you which third of the market each one sits in.
| What you are buying | Freelancer or small studio | Agency | Time to build |
|---|---|---|---|
| One page or landing page on a template | NPR 10,000 to 25,000 | NPR 30,000 to 60,000 | One to two weeks |
| Brochure site, five to ten pages, template based | NPR 15,000 to 50,000 | NPR 40,000 to 80,000 | Two to three weeks |
| Business site with original design, ten to twenty five pages | NPR 35,000 to 1,20,000 | NPR 80,000 to 2,00,000 | Four to eight weeks |
| E-commerce store with eSewa or Khalti, delivery rules, cash on delivery | NPR 50,000 to 1,50,000 | NPR 1,50,000 to 5,00,000 | Six to twelve weeks |
| Web application or portal (accounts, bookings, dashboards) | From NPR 3,00,000 | NPR 3,00,000 to 15,00,000 or more | Three months and up, priced by developer time |
Hourly rates sit behind those totals: published Nepali guides put freelancers at NPR 500 to 3,000 an hour and agencies at NPR 1,500 to 5,000. A quote that looks cheap for the scope is a quote with fewer hours in it, and the missing hours are usually performance, tracking and content structure.
What you pay every year after launch
| Item | Typical cost in Nepal | Note |
|---|---|---|
| .com.np domain | Free | Issued by Mercantile with business or citizenship documents, no renewal fee. |
| .com domain | NPR 1,200 to 2,000 a year | Better if you sell abroad. |
| Shared hosting | NPR 2,000 to 8,000 a year | Fine for a brochure site; measure the response time, not the server location. |
| VPS or cloud hosting | NPR 12,000 to 60,000 a year | For stores and applications. A content delivery network often beats a local server for Nepali visitors. |
| SSL certificate | Free | Let's Encrypt renews itself. A paid SSL line needs a reason. |
| Maintenance | NPR 2,000 to 15,000 a month for most sites, or 15 to 20 percent of the build cost a year | Updates, backups, patches, small changes. The item everyone forgets and the one that bites. |
| Premium plugins, email hosting | NPR 5,000 to 30,000 a year combined | Ask which licences the build depends on before you sign. |
| Content writing | NPR 1,500 to 5,000 a page | Assume you write it unless the quote says otherwise. |
How I price a website
I build sites myself, usually on Next.js or a static build with a content layer, with performance, structured data, analytics and conversion tracking included rather than quoted as extras, because a site without them cannot do the job you bought it for.
I quote by scope after a call, not by page count, and the code, the domain and the hosting sit in your name from the first day. What the engagement includes and leaves out is on the web development page, and ongoing work is on the pricing page.
Website design and development price in Nepal: the four tiers
1. Template site, five to ten pages
A purchased WordPress theme, your logo and colours, your text dropped in. Cheapest tier by a wide margin.
Right for: a small local business that needs to exist online credibly, show services, and be contactable. There is no shame in this tier and for many Kathmandu businesses it's the correct decision.
Watch for: themes loaded with page builders and plugins that produce a site taking many seconds to load on a mid-range Android phone. Ask for a PageSpeed Insights score on mobile before final payment.
Website design price in Nepal for a one page site
NPR 10,000 to 25,000 from a freelancer on a template, and NPR 30,000 to 60,000 from an agency with original design. A one page site works well for a single service or a campaign landing page. It does not work as a company site that needs to rank for several services. Ask for the mobile speed score and the tracking setup in the quote, because a cheap one page site that loads slowly on a phone loses the campaign it was built for.
2. Custom marketing website
Original design, built around your actual services and buyer questions, with performance work, structured data, analytics and conversion tracking included.
Right for: a business where the website is a real acquisition channel rather than a business card, and where you intend to invest in SEO or ads afterwards.
Why it costs more: because someone is making decisions about your specific buyers rather than filling in a layout. This is the tier where the website starts paying for itself, and it's the tier most Nepali businesses skip and then regret.
3. Ecommerce store
Product catalogue, cart, checkout, payment gateway, delivery charge logic, order management. Nepali stores usually also need cash on delivery handling, which is more work than it sounds because it changes order flow, confirmation and returns.
Cost drivers: number of products and variants, payment gateway integrations such as eSewa or Khalti, delivery zone rules for inside and outside the valley, and whether you need inventory sync. Once live, ongoing ecommerce SEO matters more than the build.
4. Web application or custom software
Dashboards, portals, booking systems, internal tools, anything with user accounts and business logic. Not a website in any meaningful sense and it should never be quoted by page count. Priced by developer time against a specification. See software development in Nepal.
The recurring costs, including the one that's free
Domain: probably free, and you may be being billed for it
This is the most useful thing on this page for a lot of readers. The .com.np domain is issued free of charge by Mercantile Communications, which administers the .np registry, provided you submit documentation such as a business registration certificate or citizenship document. There is no annual renewal fee.
A number of Nepali business owners are paying a vendor an annual fee for a domain that costs nothing. Check what you're being billed for. A .com international domain does carry a genuine annual registration fee and is the better choice if you sell abroad.
Hosting
Annual, and the range is wide. Cheap local shared hosting sits at the bottom; international hosting behind a content delivery network costs more and frequently performs better, including for Nepali visitors. Server location is a weak ranking signal, so choose on measured response time rather than on where the machine sits. More on this on the technical SEO page.
SSL certificate
Free, via Let's Encrypt, and it renews automatically. If SSL appears as a paid annual line item on your invoice without a specific reason, ask what you're buying.
Maintenance
The cost nobody budgets for and the one that bites. Updates, backups, security patching, plugin conflicts and small content changes. WordPress sites left unpatched for two years get compromised, and cleaning up an infected site costs more than a year of maintenance would have.
Six things usually missing from the quote
- Content. Text for every page and every service. Assume you're writing it unless the quote says otherwise in writing.
- Photography. Real photos of your premises, team and products. Stock images of foreign offices convince nobody.
- Analytics and conversion tracking. Frequently omitted, which makes every later marketing decision guesswork.
- Post-launch fixes. Ask what the support window is and what counts as a bug rather than a change.
- Maintenance. Ask for the annual figure at quote stage, not at renewal.
- SEO beyond the basics. A well-built site is eligible to rank. It doesn't rank by itself.
Who owns what, which matters more than the price
Before you pay a deposit, establish four things in writing. The domain is registered in your name or your company's. The hosting account is yours, with your own login. You receive the source code and database on completion. Google Analytics and Search Console are created under your account, with the vendor added as a user.
Every one of these gets held hostage in this market often enough to be worth stating plainly. A vendor holding your domain can end your business's online presence during a billing dispute. This is the same principle that applies to marketing accounts, covered in hiring an SEO consultant.
Comparing website development company quotes in Kathmandu
Send all three vendors the same six questions and compare the answers rather than the totals:
The same comparison works outside the capital. The web development in Pokhara and web development in Lalitpur pages say what changes in those markets, and the prices on the pricing page are the same in USD and NPR wherever you are.
- Is the design original or based on a purchased theme? Which one?
- Who writes the content, and how many pages does that cover?
- Are analytics and conversion tracking configured before launch?
- What mobile PageSpeed score will you deliver, and will you fix it if it's below that?
- What is included after launch, for how long, and what does maintenance cost annually?
- Do I receive the code, and are the domain and hosting in my name?
A vendor who answers these clearly and charges more is usually cheaper over three years than one who answers vaguely and charges less.
Why the cheapest quote often costs the most
The cheap build isn't cheap because someone is being generous. It is cheap because the omitted work is real work: performance, tracking, content structure, indexation.
The pattern I see repeatedly is a business paying very little for a site, waiting a year for enquiries that never come, then paying for SEO on a foundation that can't support it, then rebuilding within two years. The expensive part was never the invoice. It was two years of a website that never generated a customer.
That doesn't mean expensive is automatically better. It means asking what the price includes, and being suspicious when the answer is everything.
Questions about website quotes in Nepal
How much does it cost to develop a website in Nepal?
NPR 15,000 to 50,000 for a template site, NPR 35,000 to 2,00,000 for a business site with original design, NPR 50,000 to 5,00,000 for a store, and from NPR 3,00,000 for a web application. A quote without a scope is meaningless, because two five page sites can differ tenfold in the work involved.
Is a .com.np domain free?
Yes, through Mercantile with the required documentation, and there's no renewal fee. Check whether you're being billed for one anyway.
What are the recurring costs?
Hosting annually, domain if you use a .com, and maintenance. SSL is free. Maintenance is the one people forget.
WordPress or custom?
WordPress is the right default for most small Nepali businesses. Custom when you need real functionality or performance as a competitive edge.
Why are the quotes so different?
Because they describe different products in the same words. Compare scope and ownership, not totals.
How much should a business website cost in Nepal?
NPR 35,000 to 2,00,000 for a business site with original design and ten to twenty five pages, depending on who builds it and what is included. Below NPR 35,000 you are buying a template with your logo on it, which is fine if that is what you need.
How much does an e-commerce website cost in Nepal?
NPR 50,000 to 1,50,000 from a freelancer and NPR 1,50,000 to 5,00,000 from an agency, before products are loaded. Payment gateway integration, delivery zone rules and cash on delivery handling are where the hours go.
How long does it take to build a website in Nepal?
One to two weeks for a template site, four to eight weeks for an original business site, six to twelve weeks for a store, and three months or more for a web application. The usual delay is content: a site waiting for your text is the most common reason a project runs late.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency for a website?
A freelancer costs roughly half as much for the same brief, and that is the right choice for a brochure site. An agency makes sense when you need design, development, content and testing from different people at the same time, or when you want a contract and cover rather than one person.
What hidden costs should I expect?
Content writing, photography, premium plugin licences, email hosting, payment gateway setup fees, analytics setup and maintenance. Ask for each one in writing at quote stage. An NPR 80,000 quote that grows to NPR 1,50,000 after launch grew through these.
Can I build a website for free in Nepal?
You can start on a free builder, and for a hobby that is fine. For a business the free tier costs you a subdomain you do not own, ads you do not control, and a site that cannot rank. A .com.np domain and NPR 15,000 to 50,000 for a proper site is the real minimum.
Is website development cheaper in Nepal than abroad?
Yes, by a wide margin. The published ranges for a business site in Nepal sit at NPR 50,000 to 2,00,000. The same brief costs several lakhs to tens of lakhs in the United States, the United Kingdom or Australia. That gap is why Nepali developers build for clients abroad, and why you should expect the same quality standard at home.
